Invasive Species this year!
Once every 8 to 10 years we have been told we can experience a Gypsy Moth invasion here in Eastern Ontario.
Last year these critters were falling from the trees and eating greenery and foliage in massive quantities destroying huge sections of forests as well as damaging many gardeners and farmers hopes for a good crop.
Some of our team members witnessed thousands of these little creatures doing their decade resurgence as they created cocoons on leaves and crawled in many hidden areas on unsuspecting people’s homes.
Fortunately, so far this year there has been a great decline in many areas, we’ve heard of a few isolated incidents as we are certain that this is part of their evolutionary process.
Gypsy moths have begun to hatch into their winged counterparts in Eastern Ontario and in case you should come across these creatures be wary, they can cause severe reactions to those who are allergic.
So not play with these little caterpillar-like critters, the hairs on their bodies can create a terrible rash and extreme itching so if you come across these in your garden or find them crawling up and down your trees you can trap gather them for safe disposal by wrapping burlap around a section of the tree. Some people have experimented with duct tape to some degree of success but we can only say, ‘yuck!’.
After catching these creepy crawlers, you can dispose of them by putting them in a big soapy water bucket. We rather stay away from these creepy crawlers and we’re grateful that we won’t expect another invasion until the end of this decade so we hope that in the years to come our ability to protect or plants and vegetables becomes easier.
In this wonderful and always changing world so many of us are witnessing things, events, and strange invasions of species that we don’t remember seeing doing these things as kids. Climate change has created many hardships within our global eco system and we hope that your garden and your communities aren’t experiencing hardships with pests, insects, flooding, or drought.
We hope that your summer is awesome and you are enjoying the sunny or rainy days!
