We are grateful, we made it!
Season’s greetings to all of you and a very Happy New year 2023 this week-end.
Take a bow, say a good word to another, and be optimistic for a better and brighter world.
Another year has passed us by and we are grateful for all you who have joined us on our Epic comic journey.
The future will be bigger, brighter, and even more awesome as we all work to create some amazing experiences for the world.
While our lives are stuck in front of computer screens, spread sheets, and all kinds of digital creation hardware and software, we’re getting ready for our next big things and 2023 is full steam ahead for us all.
Most of our team mates are gamers and we play together when we have some free time and in our own competitive inter-office ways, from old school to new school we all have our favorite game titles.
We asked Chronicles creator Kelvin Ali about his favorite gaming experiences.
“Thanks for that question. My gaming career started early in life with the Intellivision system.
A small disc control and overlay keypad controls would be inserted for some very cool 8-bit action. This was in the 70’s and I could never have dreamed that games would be in colour and in 3D, and then in VR, but I’ve seen it all evolve as a player and now for the last decade as a professional within the industry.
When I was a kid, I loved intellivision hockey, astrosmash, baseball, and for educational purposes I remember asking for Jungle Hunt one Christmas, a word game where you took a little monkey around a screen picking up letters and making words, to show my parents that even play could be educational.
I’d sneak down when they were asleep to game and that would sometimes lead to late nights. Being a ‘computer geek’ I loved to build my own computers always looking for the best gaming experiences which led me to Commodore 64, then Commodore Amiga, and then to building my own computer gaming systems. Console would come to me late in life with the PS3 and then Xbox. So, I’ve played m fair share of games and I guess that’s why my heart led me to be educated as a game designer over a decade ago.
Understanding the new hardware and the various health concerns associated with VR gaming, we’ve been prototyping for many years and I think the technology and bandwidth is a getting to a point where games will eventually become very interactive in the future.
Over the years, I loved playing EA Sports Tiger Woods Golf, NHL, Madden, and NBA are all products I regularly dabble in for fun.
Age of Empires was amazing in the 90’s along with Command and Conquer, and this year I was fortunate enough to get some Age of Empires 4 in which was an incredibly fun co-op experience.
I recently played Command and Conquer remastered and looking back at was addictive and fun back then is now, man those graphics are so bad.
Gaming, especially with others is fun, I always set up non-gamers with PS VR experiences and it’s always amazing to see them jump, scream, and kick some serious butt depending on what I think would be fun. I usually ask first and most people love becoming into a sense of what we call presence within the VR environment.
As a kid to compliment my intellivision, coin op arcade ate a lot of my allowance so we had no choice but to become very good as basically your 25 cents was pay to play for as long as you can survive. My early childhood skills on 8-bit systems would do me well on high score lists at the arcade which was a pretty interesting place as a kid. The world was much different back then, kids could buy lottery tickets and cigarettes in the 70’s at convenience stores with relatively no issue, at least where we lived.
Arcades shared spaces with pool halls in some places so that also became a past time as we grew older. I would like the pinball games and would even go to an arcade a couple minutes away from the University I went to in Toronto which we would frequent on trips to the city to hang out as teenagers.
So, I’ve seen quite a bit of games in my life, Dragon’s Lair by Don Bluth took a lot of my quarters in the day as well as the game was so cool with real animations being mapped to simple patterns which you had to figure out. One big cut animated cut scene/game, and Paper Boy also was quite fun for me as a teen.
Shooters where awesome also, Kingpin Life of Crime was a dandy 3D shooter and then anything DICE made usually Star Wars or world war ½ shooters would be awesome. Frogger, 1942, Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, man did I waste a lot of time and quarters, but Oh was its fun man!”
