The Month of Mercy
Ramadan Kareem and Mubarak to our fans and our readers from around the world who are celebrating the Holy month of Ramadan this 1443 AH, 2022 AD.
For Muslims around the world a month of spiritual recharging, fasting, remembrance and recitation of the Quran, and doing good deeds has come again.
Ramadan is the 9th Islamic Month and which is based on the Lunar Calendar and the month when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw).
During this month, Muslims fast (from Fajr Prayer until sunset, with a specific intention), they perform Tarawih (nightly recitation of the Quran in congregational prayer), I’tikaf (seeking to remain in the Masjid, especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan), Zakatul-Fitr (which is an obligatory amount of charity based on savings and accumulated wealth, it is a minimal amount which is meant to purify your total accumulated wealth and savings), those who have do not have any wealth or savings may become Zakat eligible or a recipient of this charity. In reality many of the individuals who could qualify and are in actual need of Zakat do not seek it out of humility and Allah (swt) knows best, and Muslims perform Salatul-Eid (congregational EID prayers) to conclude Ramadan.
There are several virtues of fasting and many medical and spiritual benefits. Those who are in pre-puberty, afflicted with illness, or traveling are not required to fast if it is difficult for them. The purpose of fasting is not to put oneself in unnecessary hardship. Muslims put their trust and hope in Allah (swt) with faith that everything done for the sake of Allah (swt) will be rewarded. Fasting is deemed to be one of the most rewardable rituals of worship and a vital pillar of Islam.
The intention of one to fast is made in the heart and you do not have to explicitly pronounce to the world, “I am fasting today!”, before you begin. This act of warship and the reward provided is exclusively granted from Allah (swt) to the individual, so the benefit of fasting is solely for the individual performing this act as Allah (swt) does not need or require you to worship Him. Seeking the reward and engaging in this spiritual practice is entirely for the individual to benefit from.
Muslims will abstain from eating and drinking and consciously attempt to refrain from backbiting, ill speech or argumentation as spiritual batteries are recharged over 29 or 30 days. During this month it is said that ‘the devils are chained up’. This means that any act that is done that is not a good deed is essential from your own prior 11 months of action and intention which may have taken you off course of who you wish to be living in self-congruence with. This is one of the reasons why the entire month is needed to level yourself up and to regain control of your ‘nafs’, the ‘wild and uncontrolled’ inner thoughts that affect your mind, spirit, and soul.
During the last 10 nights of Ramadan, Muslims will seek out Laylatul-Qadr or ‘the Night of Power’ which is said to be better than 1000 months of blessing. It is a night when Angels descend from the heavens to the earth, a peaceful night in which the destiny of all mankind is sent down for the following year. According to Quran, Surah Ad-Dukan, Ayah 4, ‘In it, all matters are ordained’.
