Tips for a cold winter day!
We’ve been hit with many extreme cold temperatures in all regions of Canada and across the world, it seems our cold fronts, the hi and lo weather streams are massive this season, looking at the weatherman’s satellite imagery.
It’s safe to proclaim, “It’s been a harsh winter!”, but fortunately we have some tips for you to make the best of a snow day!
When you are stuck indoors and if you have to do any type of snow shoveling our motivation can wane, but as we all witnessed some great winter Olympic sports over the past few weeks, we may be inspired to find ways to make the best of a cold weather climate.
Do you Ski, Snowboard, or just enjoy building a snowman?
As kids growing up in Canada, we would jump in the snow, make snow angels and mini forts and of course have snowball fights! One of our favorite school yard past times was ‘hit the bell’ where we would make snowballs and whip them at the school bell which was a physical bell on the exterior wall!
As teens, and then adults it became time to shovel and scrape ice and snow off of our car windows at times just to get out day started! Sometimes in extreme cold cars won’t start and many have experienced lower battery mileage in green-powered vehicles when the temperatures drop so we’ve all felt a day where the cold has made for a stressful morning and week.
The bad times are easy to remember but what about the great days!
Did your mom make you a hot cup of hot chocolate after being telling you to go out and clean the driveway? What was the best part of the entire experience?
We know that a cup of chocolate or cocoa always brings a smile to our faces on a cold day so that’s an easy one to accomplish when we focus on the best of moments.
Maybe it’s impromptu, get out the blankets and make some popcorn movie day, this is also a good way to pass a cold day provided your power doesn’t go out. But if it did, maybe making that makeshift fort and telling great stories of other hardships can get you through the tough moments.
Cleaning up our home and or home offices is always important and necessary so when you are stuck indoors, it is a great time to start that minor clean up or paperwork you’ve been putting off, we all have it!
Maybe you love the extreme cold and want to take a walk while everyone else is cowering indoors! If you do make sure to dress appropriately and have good winter boots with a decent tread on the sole’s great traction. A hike during a snowfall can be very tranquil if the conditions are right and if you have access to nature so that is always a great option.
Some of us love to barbecue in the cold once in a while, it certainly is a different experience than the typical summertime moments of delight around the fire.
If you are an outdoors fan, maybe you can get outside out and make a snowman! We always smile when we see a homemade or creative snow sculpture on anyone’s property. Some of us compact snow into buckets and practice our art making with plastic tools.
With the wintertime comes more darkness so why not add some solar powered lights or some low wattage solar power LED strings to brighten up your space and day inside and out!
Is mood lighting your thing, a cold day can be that time to unwrap that wonderful candle you received as a ‘gift’ over the holiday season and maybe take in some aromatherapy with a hot bath or shower.
Whatever makes your day seem difficult this winter, we encourage to turn your frown upside down and just make the best of it, after every hardship will come ease as we’ve learned over time and after every single snowfall over the course of our lives.
Be safe, be responsible, and have a wonderful end of your winter season wherever you are!
