Collectibles
The average date palm takes about 5-8 years after planting to normally bear fruit! Once the fruits have begun to bear the trees can live for over 100 years depending on the climate!
We asked Beyond Badr creator Kelvin Ali about his thoughts on investing and reaping potential benefits in the collectibles industry.
“As a person who has spent a great deal of time working at multi-national corporations throughout my career, I know that investments take will time to mature. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is a scam in my experience, so you need to be patient and make very wise choices, especially with so many in the world having a scarcity mindset, so financial predators will always be lurking to tell you to get in on the ‘next big thing’. My personal advice on making financial commitments is to look at whatever it is that you yourself consume regularly and it’s probably a good idea to invest in that product. Why do say this? Well, we use gas to heat our homes over the winter in North America, so learn to invest short-term in gas stocks, prices of commodities usually leave patterns of behavior based on seasonal influence. Every year we can see predictable patterns all around us, so begin to be aware of these market behaviors and you can use them to your advantage. No one saw Covid-19 coming, but we were warned for several years of a possible global pandemic. Covid-19 created scarcity in every industry as supply chains halted and we saw an explosion of digital and physical collectible goods being discovered and traded as people were cooped up and looked to find ways to pass time in isolation and in lockdown. Old boxes were opened up to discover treasures that helped fuel micro sales and transactions as card collectors searched for those hidden jewels from their childhood collections. With your favorite athlete now being harder than ever to get access to and most likely a new normal of being even further socially distanced from sports and entertainment professionals, prices of trading cards and related merch have skyrocketed. As Toronto didn’t have an NBA team until 1995, Hockey was king and always will be in the Six, and when Vince Carter blew up the NBA scene in 2000 a lot of Canadians began to watch. My brother and I were blessed to attend the first Toronto Raptor’s game ever at ‘The Skydome’, now known as the Rogers Center. We watched the Raptors play the New Jersey Nets and they won on November 3rd, 1995. We were in the nosebleeds and our tickets cost $4.45. Fast forward to now? $4.45 cents can’t get you to Scotiabank Arena and back home on public transit today, so if you do get out to an event, I encourage you to make a small investment in memorabilia or your favorite player’s merch, and who knows, it just might just pay off someday! So investing has to be something you wire into your mindset and the earlier, in my opinion, the better! I know I have some treasures in the card and comics I purchased as a young man and even back then, I knew that I was buying certain products with an intention and a hope that their value would be increased. I never expected a hockey card to be sold for $3.5 Million like the recent sale of a Wayne Gretzky Rookie, who could know this, but card collectors are always looking for those amazing hits. The new world of NFT’s and digital card products is even more mind-boggling so my advice is, invest because of your personal attachment or need for a product to suit your lifestyle. If you wanted to invest in Sports Cards, I suggest that you find a culture that a franchise or organization holds and lives true to your values and beliefs. Don’t focus on one star or an actual person because at some point that one-star player or squad will come along. It might take years and decades, but it makes the journey so much more fun, for example, I am a Pittsburgh Steelers Fan since childhood, so I invest in Steeler nation through the good or bad, I believe all humans bond together through sport! I have also been a Toronto Maple Leafs Fan since childhood and being born in Toronto, hockey is in my blood, so despite the lifetime Championship drought I have witnessed, I still invest in and I think after many years of struggle, my investments in players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner cards may soon pay off just for being a life long fan! Go Leafs Go!”
