Have you ever wondered about the collectibles industry?
Trading cards, comics, coins, art, and video games can be valuable investments if you understand some simple concepts about storage and care of your items.
Later this year, Madani Chronicles creator Kelvin Ali, will teach a mini-course on hobby investing! Stay tuned for an opportunity to take part in the experience and join the fans who are making their first micro-investments!
Kelvin was asked why he decided to do this. When I was a kid, I would walk into little comic shops on queen street in Toronto. Keep in mind this was the 1970s and kids were allowed to roam more freely! I remember walking into the smokey collectibles shop and there was an old obese man who would have comic books from his generation on the walls. My brother and I would walk together and look for the latest comics when we got our allowances. That’s how I became a fan, the animated shorts on TV were very limited productions and the rivals of DC and Marvel spent their big budgets on Superman and Batman, Spiderman, and the Hulk! Before I ever looked at my first comic, Super Hero comic books were already 34 years into the game and I became an instant fan and one of my biggest regrets was that I didn’t preserve the earliest of my comics in ways that can be done today. When my brother and I would buy comics around 1976 (onwards) the shop owner would wrap them up in butcher paper. That brownish waxed paper that my family would be served meat in at the butcher shop! Backing boards and mylar plastic bags were not common then which is why finding an older comic (over 60 years+) in mint condition is very hard and if you were to inspect one the “smell” of the pages would be like inhaling something from another world!
