Winterizing your car this year
We can’t believe the summer and fall have come and are almost gone again so quickly and there are just 60 days left to a New Year.
This is the time of year when we start to think about winterizing our vehicles in the west and it is a great time to do general maintenance or seasonal scheduled check up if you drive. The icy roads at the beginning of the first snowfalls can be treacherous and a few simple minor adjustments and inspection to your vehicle is a great idea before the harsh winter begins.
This is a good time of year to change your windshield wipers, oil change, air filters, and a seasonal inspection of your brakes and tires could be the difference between a safe winter or an avoidable accident.
Changing to winter tires can also save you a few $ from your insurance company if you mention that you are regularly using winter tires to them and experts advise that when the temperature is consistently below 7 degrees Celsius, that is the time that your tires should be changed/rotated and winterized.
Your wiper blades are essential and an amperage check to ensure your alternator and battery is in good order and charging properly early in the season could save you a lot of headaches on that cold winter morning when the car just won’t start!
Air and cabin filters are also great ideas to change at this time to make sure you are breathing clean fresh air as your windows will be up most of the days and your heat will be on so you want to make sure that your interior vehicle heating and vents are providing maximum airflow to defrost those frosty windows in a hurry!
Top up of all of your fluids at this time is also a good idea to ensure that your car will take you to where ever you need to go safely and an extra bottle of windshield wiper fluid in the trunk may really be useful when it’s a messy journey after the roads are salted.
If you are in an area that does not have well-paved roads, a bag of sand or cat litter and a small snow shovel are also good ideas along with booster cables just in case of an unexpected snowstorm while your vehicle is parked outdoors and you happen to find yourself stuck and in need of getting going!
