Did you take a summer road trip?
At some point in your life, you’ll take a road trip. The days of navigating the roads and traveling many hours to a destination is a past-time that was loved by all.
The past year we’ve gotten back slowly on the roads and we asked Beyond Badr creator Kelvin Ali about road trips.
“I love to drive; I bought my first business in 1994. A taxi plate while I was in University and I decided that I could work at all times of day and night to accommodate my academic schedule and also live pretty well as I refused to adopt the typical poor student mentally and archetype! There were some years I think I made more money than my professors, as I was certainly had a nicer ride than several of them for work and play. My father was into very nice cars for our economic status, he worked very hard, two jobs but he loved his cars. He was into Cadillacs and Lincolns, and I had to wash many a wheel in my youthful days!
Because of my eventual love to drive, my uncles would always want me to be a wheelman for them on road trips and during the late 1980s and 1990s, the drive on the I95 to New York City would be a summertime affair to go visit friends and family and shop for goods in the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan. We hated paying American tolls so eventually, we would explore and take new routes on very lonely stretches of the country road reading physical maps and looking for little town signs to know that we were on the right track.
What I’ve learned from those times is to make an experience for others when you are on a road trip. Play games, have those killer jokes or stories ready, that soundtrack of hits if the mood gets dull or if everyone else’s passes out and you need to continue on and can do so safely!
My sincere advice for anyone hitting the roads for a long trek is to always have someone awake with you at all times, my Uncle Glen used to say we were co-pilots for each other on those awesome 8-hour drives! If you are alone, then you have made rest points for yourself and take breaks every 1-3 hours and check-in with a friend or family member to let them know where you are and when you expect to be at your destination. I found that stopping about every € tank of gas is a good place to stop and refuel, stretch your legs, wash your face, and have a washroom break!”
