Where’s your warrior?
Have you ever wished you could be one of the Sahabah?
The Beyond Badr Dev Team has been working on a video game iteration of this concept for several years and we have decided to launch on the PS5 platform for the console in years to come.
We asked Beyond Badr creator Kelvin Ali about his choice of characters for the Beyond Badr Roll Call. “This was hard, so many famous names, so many relevant figures who were only in Islam for short times during the war times.
What it really came down to as we developed the characters was the artist’s ability to comprehend the entire scope of the project initially. Our narratives were being developed and the majority of our production teams were creating assets offshore.
Quality control, language barriers, unfamiliarity with the subject matter was a critical aspect of me having to give dawah to non-Muslims and non-English speakers at the time and like all things ambiguous, some discrepancies occurred as vague or little reference to appearance at times were taken into consideration as artists were churning out assets.
We struggled to find a flow of level design and had to step back and conceptualize the entire narrative which we have completed and will be based on our Madani Chronicles comic book series. The research required to complete this massive journey was only completed in 2019 and additions and revisions are completed. We’ll completely release the comic Seerah narrative in early 2022, so our early fans will have an idea of what’s to come in our animated production and game design.
We had to step back when Covid-19 occurred and we chose to make out comic narrative the lead as script conversations and future narrative will continue to be defined. The finalization of our comic production has allowed us to know who all of our key figures and factions will be in our game development. This has allowed us to focus on even greater detail as we beautify the final comic panels as we round out this year.
Models have been completed by world-class asset makers who have contributed to several well-known IP’s in the AAA video game space. We continue to look for new ways to beautify our characters and all of our art assets that will be used in production. Great technological enhancements of the game engines, developer tools, and digital artists tools continue to allow us to make better products.
Characters we have created high-quality assets for are Abu Bakr As-Siddique (RA), Umar Bin Khattab (RA), Bilal Ibn Majah (RA), *Angel Jibreel (AS) – these are some of the characters I can share that will be in our roll call. There will also be Sassanian, Roman, and Tribal experiences that will make learning Seerah and history something that will be very cool Insh’Allah. We hope that our players will enjoy partaking in the experiences we will be creating in our level designs.
Despite working at this for development for almost a decade now I only say that we are still a long way out, but much closer to fully realizing the dream of this massive transmedia production effort. Every day we get better at what we all do and new hardware and technical developments along with future acquisition of some amazing people will allow us to make one of the best games on the planet with an authentic narrative and immersive feel of a 6th century Arabia. The PS5 platform is currently our main development platform choice, however, we will always be open to the new implementation of additional platforms and product experiences as we determine the best experiences for our gaming fans. We are affiliated with several development partners so we will consider cross-platform and cloud gaming iterations as global hardware challenges continue to be solved. I look forward to our technological future.
We are doing this to bring a quality Islamic historical experience that feels amazing and thrilling as can only be done on with a next-gen platform and we are also looking at a VR iteration, so we hope that we will get the support of comic fans, animated viewers, and of course gamers around the world in days to come. Insh’Allah.”
